BIOTECHNOLOGY MOBILE LABORATORY PROGRAM

The Biotech Lab at Ho Yu:

What is the Biotechnology Mobile Laboratory?

The Biotechnology Mobile Laboratory (the MobileLab):

  • built on a 12-metre bus platform
  • a traveling molecular biology laboratory specially designed for teachers and students to participate in hands-on experiments
  • also intended to offer science and biotech education for the public
    in various outreach programs.
  • Instructors and staff, experienced in science and biotech education, work closely with participants during the sessions to provide guidance, demonstration and instruction.
  • the “extended arm” of the Biotech Lab at Ho Yu, fully capable of supporting the curriculum development of Biology, Integrated Science and Combined Science subjects in the NSS Curriculum

Benefits for the Students, Teachers and School:

  • With the MobileLab transported to the School, teachers and students will have direct, immediate access to the advanced instruments and equipment for practical experiments
  • Students will gain valuable laboratory-based learning experiences that promote inquiry into and applications of science and biotechnology
  • Teachers will have the opportunity for on-site professional development
  • School will acquire information about building and equipping a laboratory with the MobileLab as a template

The Operation and Usage of the MobileLab:

  • The MobileLab will be parked preferably inside the boundary of a school
  • Up to 40 students can be accommodated in each class
  • Students with special needs can get access to the MobileLab using the wheelchair-access elevator and door
  • The MobileLab will have solar power and reasonable security measures built-in, features like GPS and anti-theft tactics
  • The duration of use for a school will range from one to three days on campus. The MobileLab will then be returned to its headquarter at Ho Yu, and the reagents and consumables replenished for the next visit and all wastes from the last visit disposed according to prudent, established protocols
  • The BML Program has a mandate to train teachers and teach students
  • The MobileLab can also be used for outreach activities to promote science and biotechnology among the general public in the communities
