Fun of Hand-Washing – Illustration of Washing Effectiveness by Florescent Gel(Course Code: BML-PM-01)

For Primary 3-6

Duration: 45 min

Student can learn about different kinds of microorganisms, and the associations of microorganisms with human from a short lecture. They can check the effectiveness of hand-washing using fluorescent gel, and they can learn more about proper personal hygiene.

Spread of Infection – Illustration of Washing Effectiveness by Florescent Gel (Course Code: BML-SM-01A)

(For Primary 5-6)

Duration: ~45 min

Student can learn about some common infectious diseases in Hong Kong, and the chain of infection, and how to stop the spread of infection. They carry out an experiment to observe how “microbes” can spread from person to person simply by shaking each other hand. They also have to decide which method is the best for hand-washing by using fluorescent gel after the experiment.

Where are the Germs? – Beware of the Invisibles(Course Code: BML-PM-02)

For Primary 4-6

Duration: Day One: ~ 1.5 hrs for hand-on experiments,

Day Two: ~ 30-45 min for Result Analysis and Discussion

Students can learn about the concept of “micrometer”, different kinds of microorganisms, and the associations of microorganisms with human from a short lecture. They can culture the microorganisms from their fingers, and compare the differences of the colour of microbial colonies, and the number of microorganisms before and after hand-washing. They can also collect samples from the surrounding and their personal belongings, for instance, watches, shoes, glasses, etc. It is an interesting and amazing hands-on experiment to “visualize” the microorganisms after incubation!

Effects of Temperature on Bacterial Growth(Course Code: BML-PM-03)

For Primary 4-6

Duration: Day One: ~45 -60min for hand-on experiments,

Day Two: ~30 min for Result Analysis and Discussion

Students can learn about the concept of bacterial growth, and effects of temperature on bacterial growth from a short lecture. They can spread a layer or a lawn of bacterial cells on agar plates, and place agar plates into incubators with different temperatures to investigate the effects of the temperature on bacterial growth.

Effects of Household Chemicals on Bacterial Growth(Course Code: BML-PM-04)

For Primary 4-6

Duration: Day One: ~ 70 min for hand-on experiments,

Day Two: ~30 min for Result Analysis and Discussion

Students can learn about the concept of bacterial growth, and different methods of disinfection from a short lecture. They can spread a layer or a lawn of bacterial cells on agar plates, and place paper discs of different household chemicals, like mouthwash, toothpaste, alcohol, etc, onto agar plates to investigate the effects of the chemicals on bacterial growth.

Determination of Bacterial Cell Number by Serial Dilution and Spreading(Course Code: BML-PM-05)

For Primary 4-6

Duration: Day One: ~ 1-1.5 hrs for hand-on experiments,

Day Two: ~30-45 min for Result Analysis and Discussion

Students can learn about the concepts of bacterial growth and serial dilution, and methods to determine bacterial growth from a short lecture. They can spread a layer or a lawn of bacterial cells from different amount of cells on agar plates, and count the number of cells from different samples after incubation.

Colour-to-Learn (Course Code: BML-PM-06)

 (For Primary 1-6)

Duration: ~30-45 min

Student can learn about different concepts on Microbiology by colouring, for instance, Spontaneous Generation, Understanding of Dimensions of Microbes, Types of Bacteria, Conditions for Bacterial Growth, Physical Control of Microorganisms, etc.
