P5A Gurung Rehana

P5A Paudyal Kaya

P5C Gang Sungwoo

Gang Sungwoo

P6A Recio Fabregat Hugo

S4A Salonga Mateo Ciane M.

The awardees actively participate in various school and community activities to blend in and promote inclusive campus culture through their own hobbies.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - P5A Gurung Rehana

Rehana is eager to participate in various speech and storytelling competitions and has won multiple awards. Since Cantonese is not REHANA’s mother tongue, she must spend much more time to practise for the best performance. Her conscientiousness and confidence even motivated her fellow classmates to study Chinese harder.

Serving as a bridge between local students and non-Chinese speaking students, Rehana is eager to communicate and interact with schoolmates from different cultural backgrounds with a view to creating a harmonious multicultural campus. REHANA and her parents also participate in various activities to share and exchange Nepal and Hong Kong cultures with other classmates so that they get to know and appreciate each other’s cultures.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - P5A Paudyal Kaya

Kaya is curious in learning despite the language barrier. She will consult her teachers or classmates at once when she comes across something unclear. She also influences her classmates and promotes the learning atmosphere in her class. In addition, she is willing to embrace various cultures and befriend schoolmates in different races. She enjoys sharing the culture of her mother country to promote cultural exchange among students.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - P5C Gang Sungwoo

Sungwoo speaks Korean as his first language. He joined our school when he was in primary two. As he spoke neither Chinese nor English then, it was quite difficult for him to communicate with his classmates. Nevertheless, he was eager to learn and gave it his best shot to communicate with them in different languages. Therefore, he blended in very fast.

As a late starter in Chinese learning, Sungwoo often had difficulties doing his Chinese homework. But still, he studied very hard and made every endeavour to finish the homework, such as looking up words in the dictionary, asking his classmates and teachers for help, etc. His resilience is indeed incredible. Thanks to his efforts over the past few years, we are proud to say that his Chinese academic results are now among the top in the NCS Chinese class.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - P6A Recio Fabregat Hugo

Hugo is passionate about soccer and hopes to promote cultural exchange through this sport. Influenced by his father Fernando Recio Comí (Hong Kong Top Footballer in 2013/14), HUGO has been interested in soccer ever since he was a little child. HUGO’s father has been cooperating well with his local team members while giving full play to his own capability and talent despite the very nationality, language and cultural barriers. Following in his father’s footsteps, HUGO dedicates himself to Hong Kong’s soccer industry.

Hugo has joined the Kitchee Academy and our school’s soccer team since the age of 6, and attended regular training every week. He also studied Chinese very hard to overcome the language barrier. His hard work eventually paid off. HUGO is getting along well with his local teammates. As a dream team, they always cheer each other up. His outstanding performance contributes to our soccer team’s multiple wins.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - S4C Tai Sabrina Yi Ting

I got to know many local students at Hoyu College. They taught me a lot about Chinese. Among my elective subjects, Visual Arts are taught in Chinese. When I had problems doing my homework, my classmates would teach me patiently. As I always communicate with them in Cantonese, my Cantonese has been a lot more fluent now. Some of them even taught me Putonghua!

In addition, I would share with them how I learned English, such as the skills and pronunciation. As such, we facilitated our friendship through learning.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - S4A Laraib

I remembered when I was in secondary 4, I had to introduce myself on the first day of school. I was really nervous then. Gradually, with the encouragement of my teachers, I have been more confident. I remembered when I introduced myself in Cantonese, my classmates were very surprised and they even clapped for me. As I have been learning Cantonese since I was young, I can communicate well with local students. I am very grateful to my Chinese teachers too. Since that day, I gradually blended in and made friends with my local classmates.

To me, learning Chinese is not that difficult. As long as I work hard, I can achieve what I want. I hope I can learn more about Chinese and make more local friends.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - S4A Faisal Maheen

As I have been learning Cantonese since I was young, I can communicate with local students in fluent Cantonese. I remembered at a Christmas party, the teacher asked if we were going to perform in the talent show. I volunteered because I wanted to teach my classmates and teachers the language of Pakistan. I discussed with my mum the teaching steps and details at home. On the day of performance, I was very nervous, but also looking forward to it. At first, my classmates thought that the language would be hard to learn. So I used simple words and games to help them learn the language. The outcome was very satisfying!

I was very happy and proud that day as I introduced my culture to them. They in return promised to teach me more Chinese words and Cantonese.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - S4A Batool Tazki

Although I am an NCS student from Pakistan, I am getting along well with the local students here.

When I was in secondary 1, I once had problem finding the school library. Seeing me look around confused, a local student came and asked me what happened. I told her that I wanted to go to the library. It was very nice of her to lead the way and took me there. After that, we have become good friends, and she was the first local friend of mine at Ho Yu.

When I come across difficulties in doing Chinese homework, I would seek help from the local students. Likewise, when they have questions about English, I would in return teach them patiently. We learn about each other’s cultures as well. For example, I would celebrate some of the Chinese traditional festivals, such as Chinese New Year.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - S4A Kalsoom Ijaz

Studying at Ho Yu, I need to communicate with classmates and teachers in Cantonese. Although it is very challenging, my Chinese proficiency has improved significantly.

I once participated in a sharing session with another school’s teachers and students, and I had to speak in front of everyone in Cantonese. I was very nervous at that time. Fortunately, with ample preparation and teacher’s encouragement, I delivered the speech successfully.

Learning Chinese is essential to me. As I will be staying in Hong Kong, I must attain certain Chinese proficiency to integrate into the society.

Awardee of the Harmony Scholarship - S4A Salonga Mateo Ciane M.

I joined the Ho Yu family since secondary one. At first, I was not very used to it because most of my classmates were local students whom I had difficulties communicating with. Fortunately, I joined the cheerleading team enriching my school life.

Cheerleading focuses on teamwork and mutual trust between team members. Therefore, communication is a must. I have made many local friends here. The more I talked in Cantonese, the more I improved. At first, I did feel a bit awkward, but now I am brave enough to express myself. Thanks to them, I blend in so well.
